Bealtaine Festival Events 2022 at Portlaoise Library 

Film Club

A screening of Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn takes place at Portlaoise Library on Wednesday 4th May  11.30am and and a screening of Lover Come Back, starring Doris Day on Wednesday 18th May, 11.30am.

Gardening Talk

Join Laois Libraries and horticulturist, Mary Keenan for an instructional Gardening Talk! Mary will share tips and how to look after and care for your garden. Mary Keenan a former college lecturer at the The Botanic Gardens, editor of The Irish Garden Magazine and Irish Farmer’s Journal. She is proprietor of Gash Gardens, Castletown Co. Laois.  This event takes place on Thursday, 5th May at 6.00pm in Portlaoise Library and Tuesday, 10th May at 3.30pm in Rathdowney Library.

Fire Safety in the Home

Laois Libraries have a series of Fire Safety Talks taking place throughout our branches in May and June. Running as part of the Bealtaine Festival, the talks are an Age and Opportunity Arts initiative. The information talk will be presented by Laois Fire Services. This event takes place on Friday, 6th May at 11.00am.

Bealtaine Literature at Eleven takes place on Thursday 12th May at 11.00am

Crime Prevention and Safety

Portlaoise Library will be joined by a member of the Community Policing Unit from Portlaoise Garda Síochána for an infomation talk on on crime prevention and home security safety which aims to improve the quality of life for people in our communities. This event takes place on Wednesday 11th May at 11.30am.

Flower Arrangement Demonstration

Laois Libraries in conjunction with LOETB will host a Flower Arrangement Demonstration, This event takes place on Tuesday 17th May at 2.30pm.

Everything you need to know about making a Will

Thomasina Connell from Thomasina Connell  and Co. Solicitors, Portlaoise will give a free information session on ‘Everything you need to know about making a will’ This event takes place on Thursday 19th May at 6.30pm.

Energy Conservation in the Home

Laois Libraries and Europe Direct Portlaoise, are delighted to welcome back energy consultant Colm ÓhÁonghusa for an information session on energy conservation in the home. Energy Bills, Heat Losses, Hot Water, Transport and Controls are just a small selection of the topics that will be discussed. This event takes place on Thursday, 26th May at 6.30pm.

History Talk

Laois Libraries is hosting a series of History talks over the summer. The first talk will be by RTE Presenter David McCullagh Wading through blood: de Valera’s 1922 and the coming of Civil War. This event takes place in Portlaoise Library on Saturday 28th May at 4pm.

Would you like to find out more information about local community groups? Laois community groups will be present in Portlaoise library during the month of May. Irish countrywomen’s association stand, will be visiting on Tuesday 3rd, May at 10.30am -11.30am. Men’s Shed, Tuesday, 10th May, 11.00-12.00pm. Active Retirement, Tuesday 17th May, 11.00am-12.00pm and Tidy Towns, Saturday 21st May, 11.00am-12.00pm.

Baby Book Club

Baby book club uses songs, stories, books and rhymes to build a foundation to literacy in your baby and toddler through sound awareness for ages 0-3years, fortnightly. Next meeting takes place on Thursday 5th May at 10.30am

Armchair Adventures Book Club

Join us for a discussion on books that you have read and would like to read. The group meet on the last Friday of each month. Recommended reading for 10-12 years. Next meeting takes place on Friday 29th April at 4pm.

Radioactive Readers Junior Book Club

Join us to chat about the books you like to read and to choose the library’s pick of the month for the following month’s discussion. The book club meet each month on Thursdays. Recommended reading for 6- 9 years. Next meeting takes place on Thursday, 12th May at 4pm.

Adult Book Club

Join us for a group discussion on books that you have read and would like to read. The group meet each month on Wednesdays. Next meeting takes place on 4th May at 6.30pm.

Knitting Circle

The Knitting Circle meet weekly on Wednesday mornings from 11am-1pm All levels welcome

Ciorcal Comhrá

Join us for our weekly chat in Irish – Irish conversation. Wednesday at 5.30pm-6.30pm. All levels welcome.

The Genealogy Club

Join us at Portlaoise Library to chat with family history enthusiasts, learn from their experiences and share your unique family history stories. TBC.

Literature at Eleven

Literature at Eleven group meet fortnightly, featuring poetry and prose readings and a chat afterwards. Next meeting takes place on Thursday 28th April at 11am.
