Dealing with Anxiety: Helen Vaughan, IACP Accredited Psychotherapist, will host a one-hour webinar for parents on strategies for dealing with anxiety. This webinar will focus on Anxiety detailing how it works, why it exists and how to improve handling stress in a crisis. Helen Vaughan is a Psychotherapist, broadcaster & owner of Maynooth Counselling & Psychotherapy. She’s a regular contributor in the media on mental health issues, having worked as a radio and TV journalist for 15 years before becoming a therapist. Helen specialises in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which focuses on how our self-talk or thoughts affect our stress levels and how we can learn to think more usefully during a crisis. First Aid for Parents: Paediatric First Aid Session focusing on lifesaving topics and medical emergencies. In this interactive first aid session, Parents First Aid will cover and demonstrate the two main lifesaving topics: Infant & Child CPR and How to deal with a Choking Infant & Child. Other medical emergencies such as Burns/Scalds, Bleeding, Seizures, Breaks & Fractures will also be discussed, with participants also been given the opportunity to ask questions of the instructors. Parent First Aid was set by Peter Finnegan following his own medical emergency in October 2014, when his 2-year-old son started choking on a piece of fruit in the family home. This experience spurred Peter into enrolling in a First Aid class but unable to find anything suitable, he made the decision to set up Parent First Aid. Navigating Sleep from 4 to 10 years: In this webinar, Erica will offer advice and guidance giving you the tools to create healthy sleep habits for your child. Description: In this workshop, Erica will look at Why Sleep is So Important, What Happens when we Sleep, Child Sleep Challenges – What they are & Why they Happen. Erica Hargaden is a certified Child Sleep Consultant and member of the International Association of Child Sleep Consultants. When Erica found a sleep routine that worked for her own three children, she found friends coming to her for advice. Baby Massage with Sharon Touhey, Bump & Baby
Baby Massage is a baby-led class and is a wonderful experience that you can share with your baby. It teaches you the ancient art of baby massage and offers you and your baby many benefits, both emotional and physical, while meeting other parents and their little ones. My Little Library Book Bag. Have you a child thatstarted primary school this year? Then drop into Portlaoise library to collect your FREE My Little Library Book Bag. The library book bag is for all children starting school this year. To help children to navigate starting school, libraries have put together a bag of books just for them that can be collected at any library. The ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ initiative is a collaboration between libraries, the Department of Rural and Community Development, and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth as part of the First 5 Strategy.
As part of the initiative, a ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ is available FREE for every child starting school in 2022 to help them to prepare for this big step. Children and their parents or guardians can collect the bags at any library throughout the country.
Each My Little Library Book Bag contains:
- Three books on starting school, making friends and being comfortable to be yourself
- A story card on going to the library
- A postcard the child can write or draw on and send to their new teacher, or bring to give to the teacher on their first day at school
- Their very own library card and special ‘My Little Library’ cardholder
Book bags are available in both Irish and English. Libraries can’t wait to welcome all the 4 and 5 year old children in to collect their book bags and begin their library membership journey. We hope that once they visit the library to pick up their book bag, our new library members and their families will come back regularly to keep their bag filled up with borrowed books and to take part in storytimes, classes and all the other events we have to offer at the library.
