Laois County Council is supporting the annual illumination event to combat stigma associated with HIV and AIDS called “Glow Red for World AIDS Day” – #GlowRed4WAD by illuminating Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise on the evening of the 30th November through to 1st December to mark the occasion.
The event is spearheaded by HIV Ireland, Ireland’s only national charitable organisation dedicated to combating HIV and HIV-related stigma. This year, the event will mark the 40th Anniversary of the emergence of HIV and AIDS as a global epidemic in 1981. Since then, more than 9,000 people living in Ireland have acquired HIV and rates of HIV continue to rise. Tackling HIV related stigma helps to reduce rates of HIV transmission.
Hashtags being used across social media platforms for the event #GLOWRED4WAD, #WorldAIDSDay, #HIV and #stigma.
HIV Ireland are also encouraging people to wear red and show your support to end HIV and HIV-related stigma. Tag them on Twitter @HIVIreland with your pictures wearing red using the hashtag #GLOWRED4WAD.
