Minding Your Body

Dry January is an increasingly popular trend among people who want to start the new year off on a healthy note. Taking part in challenges like Dry January has multiple short and long-term benefits. If you’re considering taking on this challenge, it can seem daunting at first. However, there are a few tips that can help you get through the month without feeling deprived or overwhelmed.

The Drinkaware Barometer 2023 reveals 63% of adults in Ireland’s motivation to drink less is to improve their physical health followed by 45% for personal finances and 31% to improve their mental health. Taking an extended break from alcohol has both short and long-term health benefits. You will soon start noticing that your sleep will improve which will lead you to having more energy. Your skin will look brighter and less dull, and you may notice your clothes starting to fit better. Long-term benefits include improved mental health as you won’t be waking up with ‘the fear’. You are also lowering your risk of multiple alcohol-related illnesses.

It’s important to have a support system in place. Let your friends and family know that you’re participating in Dry January so that they can offer encouragement and support. You can also seek out online communities or support groups where you can connect with others who are going through the same experience.

Find alternative activities that you enjoy doing instead of drinking this Dry January. This could be anything from taking up running to trying a new hobby like cooking or reading. Having something to focus on and look forward to can make the month go by much faster.

Alcohol can be expensive so see how much you are spending on your average night out. With 45% of people in Ireland saying they would rather spend money on something else other than alcohol why not look at your last night out or a trip to the pub and see what you have spent? This Dry January, tally up how much your average night costs you and put it into a savings account or vault in your bank app. Spend it then on something you want or enjoy at the end of the month, it may spark something in you to keep going for another month!

Try to avoid situations where alcohol is the focus. This might mean skipping the local trip to the pub or opting for non-alcoholic drinks when out with friends. You can also suggest alternative activities like going to the cinema or having a game night at home instead.

Remember that the benefits of participating in Dry January are numerous. Not only can it improve your overall health and well-being, but it can also help you save money and improve your sleep. So, take it one day at a time and know that you’re doing something positive for yourself. Good luck!
