What are Rates?

Commercial Rates are the financial contribution business owners and occupiers make which provides for a wide range of services that improve our Community.

Where does the income from Commercial Rates go?

Income from Commercial Rates is used to fund a wide range of Local services provided by Laois County Council each year such as Fire Services, Public Lighting, Libraries, Public Parks, Playgrounds and many projects.

Who pays Rates?

The person liable for the payment of Commercial Rates is the person in occupation of the rateable property on The Date of the Making of the Rate.

In the event that there is another occupation after the date the rate has been struck, Laois County Council can determine that the incoming occupier should pay a portion of the rate proportionate to their occupation. This issue of other charges on the property should be addressed with your Solicitor during the preparation of leases or property transfers. See Transfer of interest in a Rateable Property

How are Rates assessed?

The Rate Charge is calculated by multiplying the “Rateable Valuation” by the “Annual Rate on Valuation”.

The “Rateable Valuation” of a property is determined by the Commissioner of Valuation.

The “Annual Rate on Valuation” is set annually by the Members of Laois County Council at their budget meetings.

Example:-

Rateable Valuation of Property as determined by the Valuation Office = €5,500.00
Rate on Valuation for 2024  = €0.2217
Rates due for 2024 (€5,500.00 x €0.2217) = €1,219.35

Conas a dhéantar measúnú ar Rátaí?

Ríomhtar an Muirear Rátaí tríd an “Luacháil Inrátaithe” a iolrú faoin “Ráta Bliantúil ar Luacháil”. Is é an Coimisinéir Luachála a chinneann “Luacháil Inrátaithe” maoine. Socraíonn Comhaltaí Chomhairle Chontae Laoise an “Ráta Bliantúil luachála” gach bliain ag a gcruinnithe buiséid. Sampla:- Luacháil Inrátaithe Maoine de réir mar a chinneann an Oifig Luachála = €5,500.00 Ráta ar Luacháil do 2024 = €0.2217 Rátaí dlite do 2024 (€5,500.00 x €0.2217) = €1,219.35

 

When are Commercial Rates Payable?

The Rate Demand is issued annually (early February) and is payable in two instalments, the first instalment (50%) plus arrears (if any) is payable when the Rate Bill is issued. The second instalment is payable on the 1st July.

Cén uair a bhíonn Rátaí Iníoctha?

Eisítear an tÉileamh Rátaí gach bliain (go luath i mí Feabhra) agus tá sé iníoctha in dhá thráthchuid, tá an chéad tráthchuid (50%) móide riaráistí (más ann dóibh) iníoctha nuair a eisítear an Bille Rátaí. Tá an dara tráthchuid iníoctha ar an 1 Iúil.

 

Can I spread my rate payment over the year?

Yes. By signing up to a Standing Order Mandate. The Council will accept monthly payments as long as the Rates are paid in full by the year end.

How can I pay my Commercial Rates?

  1. Standing Order Mandate
  2. Directly to the Rate Collector for your area
  3. Electronic Funds Transfer
  4. To the Cash Office County Hall or by post at: The Cash Office, Laois County Council, County Hall, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. (Monday-Friday 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.)

Methods of Payment through the Cash Office

  • Cash (Please do not send cash by post)
  • Cheque
  • Postal Order.
  • Money Order.
  • Debit Card (Laser)
  • Credit Card.
  • By phone on (057) 8674308 giving debit/credit card details.
  • Bank Draft

In all cases, please quote your Commercial Rate Account Number.
