Commercial Vehicle Motor Tax

Owners of commercial vehicles within Laois which are being taxed for the first time must tax their vehicle with Laois County Council.

Motor Tax

Owners of vehicles may tax their vehicle for the first time, renew motor tax or change vehicle details at their local authority or at www.motortax.ie.

Motor Tax Exemption

Owners of vehicles that are exempt from motor tax may receive an exempt motor tax disc from Laois County Council.

You must submit an off the road declaration to Laois County Council if you are not renewing your motor tax during the month it expires.

Trade Plate Licence

Commercial Rates Payment

Occupiers of rateable commercial properties such as shops, offices, factories, warehouses, hotels and licensed premises must pay commercial rates on their property to Laois County Council. The rates bill is due and payable in full on the first day in January each year. From 2026, interest will be applied to unpaid rate accounts.

Commercial Rates Transfer Notification

Occupiers of rateable commercial properties must notify Laois County Council when a property is being transferred to another owner or occupier and also confirm who is responsible for paying commercial rates.

Commercial Rates Vacancy Relief Refund

Occupiers of rateable commercial properties which are vacant on the date the rate is made by Laois County Council and have their rates paid in full, may apply for a refund for the period of the vacancy.

Commercial Rates Valuation Review Support

Laois County Council cannot change the Valuation of a Property. Tàilte Eireann (Valuation Office) may support occupiers of rateable properties to have their rateable valuation reviewed if there is a Material Change to the Property.

Property Tax

Local Property Tax Adjustment Consultation

An annual self-assessed Local Property Tax (LPT) charged on the market value of all residential properties in the State came into effect with the passing of the Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 . It is being administered by Revenue and a half-year charge applied in 2013. A full year charge applies in 2014.

Non Principal Private Residence Certificate of Discharge

Owners of private residential properties, which were not the owner's main residence during the years 2009 to 2013, may apply to Laois County Council for a certificate to confirm that all charges on the property have been paid before selling or transferring the property to a new owner.

Non Principal Private Residence Certificate of Exemption

Owners of private residential properties, who were the owner's main residence during the years 2010 to 2013, may apply to Laois County Council for a certificate to confirm that their property was exempt from charges for a specified period of time before selling or transferring the property to a new owner.

Non Principal Private Residence Charge Payment

Owners of private residential properties, which were not the owner's main residence during the years 2009 to 2013, must pay a charge on the property to the Non Principal Private Residence Bureau through Laois County Council.

Laois County Council provide information and advice to owners of private residential properties, which were not the owner's main residence during the years 2009 to 2013, to inform them about the annual charge, possible exemptions, penalties and proof of payment.

Laois County Council provide information and advice about local authority mortgages such as repayments, interest charges, account statements and insurance.

Mortgage Redemption Statement

Laois County Council mortgage holders, who wish to pay their mortgage in full, can apply to the local authority for a redemption figure to confirm the amount of the mortgage outstanding.
