Please note that the ‘goods’ rate of motor tax is a reduced rate for vehicles which are used for business purposes only.
A vehicle which is used for private purposes should be taxed at the standard ‘private’ rate, which allows for both private/domestic as well as business use of the vehicle (with the exclusion of parking in loading bays).
Requirements for the first taxation of a commercial vehicle (in the current ownership) at the goods rate of motor tax
- Light commercial vehicles (registered to a limited company)
- Light commercial vehicles (registered to an individual)
- Heavy Goods Vehicles
- Weighbridges in Laois
What do I need to tax a light commercial vehicle when registered to a limited company?
- RF100A/RF100B – where the vehicle is being taxed for the first time in the current ownership
OR
RF100 – where the vehicle is being taxed for the very first time (this includes vehicles that are newly registered in the state). - A completed goods only declaration form RF111A – signed in the presence of your local Garda Station who will verify this by signing and stamping the form.
- The CRW (certificate of roadworthiness) must be current if the vehicle is 1 year old or over.
- A weight docket from an Authorised Weighbridge –required for any goods vehicle that is being taxed unless the vehicle is newly-registered (never taxed before) and was recorded on import as weighing less than 1,524kg. (Please see below for Laois County Council Authorised Weighbridges).
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC /Logbook) - original copy only (please note this will not yet have been issued, and will not be required, if the vehicle was never taxed before).
What do I need to tax a light commercial vehicle registered in the ownership of an individual?
- Correspondence on Revenue headed paper that indicates you are registered for income tax and/or VAT as self-employed
(please note that we cannot accept a tax clearance certificate or herd number as they do not confirm the holder is self-employed).
OR
A letter from a registered accountant on their headed paper stating that they “act as your Agent, that you are registered for income Tax as a Sole Trader and that your business is currently trading.”
OR
A letter from your employer on their company headed paper (showing their VAT/revenue registration number) stating your name and address, the vehicle registration number, and confirming that the vehicle is used solely during the course of your employment with their business. - RF100A/RF100B – where the vehicle is being taxed for the first time in the current ownership
OR
RF100 – where the vehicle is being taxed for the very first time (this includes vehicles that are newly registered in the state). - A completed goods only declaration form RF111A – signed in the presence of your local Garda Station who will verify this by signing and stamping the form.
- The original certificate of insurance (not the disc) – which must state that the applicant/ vehicle concerned is covered for carriage of goods in the course of their business (the nature of which must match that which is stated on your goods only declaration form RF111A).

- A weight docket from an Authorised Weighbridge – required for any goods vehicle that is being taxed unless the vehicle is newly-registered (never taxed before) and was recorded on import as weighing less than 1,524kg. (Please see below for Laois County Council Authorised Weighbridges).

What do I need to tax a Heavy goods vehicle / HGV (a vehicle with a design gross vehicle weight over 3,500kg)?
- RF100A/RF100B – where the vehicle is being taxed for the first time in the current ownership
OR
RF100 – where the vehicle is being taxed for the very first time (this includes vehicles that are newly registered in the state). - The CRW (certificate of roadworthiness) must be current if the vehicle is 1 year old or over.
- A weight docket from an Authorised Weighbridge. (Please see below for Laois County Council Authorised Weighbridges).
In the case of articulated tractor units, the vehicle must be weighed with the heaviest trailer it will be drawing (both the vehicle registration and trailer mark must be noted on the weight docket). A weighmasters certificate must also be provided for articulated lorries. - Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC/Logbook) - original copy only (please note this will not yet have been issued, and will not be required, if the vehicle was never taxed before).
