How can I declare my vehicle off the road?
If a vehicle is temporarily not going to be used in a public place but the owner wishes to bring the vehicle back on the road in the future, an RF150 form should be completed declaring the vehicle off the road.
This can only be done at certain times as follows:
- during the month the tax disc expires i.e. in advance of the start of the proposed period of non-use
- within 20 days of the date of purchase of a vehicle, or of the registration date of an imported vehicle
The completed self-declaration form must be submitted to your local motor tax office for processing, for which a receipt will issue. It is also possible to do this using the motor tax online portal by choosing the option to ‘Declare a Vehicle Temporarily Off the Road.’
What is the minimum and maximum period to declare a vehicle off the road?
The minimum period to declare a vehicle off the road is three months up to a maximum of 12 months. It is important to note that if you wish to declare the vehicle off the road for an extended time, the declaration must be renewed before the current one ends.
If you want to put your vehicle back on the road before the declared off-road period finishes, you can proceed to tax it when required: the period of non-use will end, and your disc will begin from the current month onwards.
