Portlaoise Library was named the Ireland’s first Library of Sanctuary in 2020
Laois Libraries are open and accessible community spaces with well-trained staff who appreciate the value and potential of the variety of groups and individuals who comprise our community. Libraries celebrate cultural diversity through books, other printed resources, media and events, and reach out to diverse communities to meet their needs and interests.
Our aim
Our aim is to engender a sense of belonging and affirmation, to create a space where people can feel at home, meet in a warm and non-judgemental atmosphere, study, find news and books in their own language, learn new skills and meet new friends.
Portlaoise Library in particular have engaged in a number of projects with Laois Integration Network and some of its member organizations to celebrate and serve our diverse community. In light of that, Portlaoise Library was named the Ireland’s first Library of Sanctuary in 2020.
