Archives Information and Advice

Laois County Council provide information and advice to history and heritage groups and the public on preserving archives, local history and donating archive collections. They use social media and websites to raise awareness of their resources.

What are archives? 

Archives are an important part of our heritage .They are the accumulated unique records of an individual or institution that warrant permanent preservation because of their value to their creator for legal administrative or fiscal purposes or to researchers because of their potential research value. 

Archive holdings in Laois 

Laois County Archives hold archival material relating to the public bodies of County Laois. Our holding include archives from public bodies which are now abolished 

In addition Laois County Archives actively acquire archives relating to individuals business and organisations from the County 

How do I access the archives in Laois 

The Local Studies section is where the archives and collections related to county Laois are held and are available for the public to view. The Local studies section is located in Portlaoise New library, Main Street, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, R32N7EP.
