What is a Sustainable Energy Community (SEC)
The main objectives of an Sustainable Energy Communities (SECs) are to:
- maximize energy efficiency
- utilize renewable energy sources where feasible, and
- develop decentralized energy supplies.
SECs are inclusive of various energy users within the community, including:
- homes
- sports clubs
- community centers
- churches, and
- businesses
Key features of a Sustainable Energy Community (SEC)
- Energy efficiency: Implementing measures to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency across all sectors.
- Renewable energy: Adopting renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and biomass, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Decentralised energy supplies: Developing local energy generation and storage solutions to enhance energy security and resilience.
Partnership with Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)
A Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) can choose to partner with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), gaining access to dedicated funding opportunities. This partnership enables the community to develop a comprehensive Community Energy Master Plan and set clear energy objectives through the Register of Opportunities.
Support from Laois County Council
Laois County Council actively supports Sustainable Energy Communities by providing bridge funding. This funding helps Sustainable Energy Communities (SECs) engage consultants to prepare their Energy Master Plan, a critical step in outlining strategies for achieving sustainable energy goals.
By fostering collaboration and providing financial support, Laois County Council enables Sustainable Energy Communities (SECs) to effectively plan and implement Energy Master Plans, contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of the community.
