General Dog Licence

You must hold a valid licence if you manage a dog kennel with 20 or more dogs. You can apply to the local authority for an annual licence.

Dog licence application

Do you have a dog? If so, it is a legal requirement that if you own a dog you must have a current dog licence.

Licences are not needed for:

  • Guide dogs for blind people
  • Dogs in the possession of a local authority
  • Dogs in the possession of the ISPCA or Gardaí
  • Any dog imported into the State for less than 30 days

Dog license costs

  • A single Dog Licence costs €20 per year.
  • A lifetime of Dog Licence costs €140 for the duration of an individual dog’s life.
  • A general Dog Licence costs €400 per year. It is for an unspecified number of dogs but for a specific address. This is suitable for those who have more than 20 dogs (for example Hunts clubs, greyhounds)
