Mountmellick Library was delighted to host Laois author Linda McEvoy for a special event to launch her new book 'The Christmas Market' on 15th October.
Linda had this to say about the inspiration for her debut novel:
"The story and characters are completely fictional but the setting is inspired by my visits home to Mountmellick at Christmas - the tree, the lights, the Christmas markets in the Square and the little halls around town. It also takes inspiration from Emo Court, especially the walled garden there. My editor said the novel made her want to pack up and move to this small midlands town and she loved the lively characters and evocative setting. But she also loved the grit underneath the dusting of Christmas glitter. The book deals with bullying, grief, the impact of the housing crisis on young adults, and the waste of vacant, derelict buildings in so many Irish towns. But all in the tone of a swoony Christmas romance.
I began writing fiction upstairs in Mountmellick Library when I moved home to Mountmellick in 2022. The library staff have all been wonderfully supportive, especially Olivia and Amanda. I have enjoyed many mornings with the writing group and in brilliant workshops with writers including Claire Keegan, Niamh Boyce, and Kathleen Murray, thanks to Olivia who has been an amazing support to the writing group."
Linda's book is available in bookshops now and at your nearest library - reserve a copy. It's a perfect read to cosy up with in the lead up to Christmas! ๐
