The 14th Annual Europe Direct National Soapbox Competition, held at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin, celebrated Ireland’s young voices speaking on the topic: “A.I. is not a threat to humanity.” Representing the Europe Direct Portlaoise region were Navroop Kaur from Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington, and Harry McGree from St. Mary’s CBS, Portlaoise, who delivered standout performances.
Navroop competed in the Under 16 category, impressing the audience with her eloquence. In the 17+ category, Harry earned a Highly Commended, Runner-up title, delivering a well-structured speech that impressed the judges. Both secured their places at the national finals after winning their categories at the regional competition held on November 13th at Portlaoise Library, which featured 38 participants.
The national winners were Cian Smyth from Co. Cavan (Under 16) and Ava Young from Co. Galway (17+). The competition is fostered and supported by the European Commission and facilitated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and the eight Europe Direct Centres, located in public libraries around the country.
All participants showcased remarkable talent and confidence, reflecting the bright future of Ireland’s next generation. Congratulations to all!
