The Bolt eBikes initiative has been a major success in promoting sustainable urban mobility. Launched as part of the town's commitment to promoting active travel and enhancing eco-friendly transportation, the ebike hire program has seen strong adoption by residents and visitors alike. The e-bikes have made commuting around Portlaoise more convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly, helping to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
Portlaoise saw an introductory level of 40 ebikes strategically placed across the town. With an easy-to-use app and 30 bike location stations, the Bolt eBike program has not only encouraged greener travel but also improved accessibility to key areas. The success of this initiative aligns with broader climate action goals, showing how local communities can lead in promoting sustainable transportation solutions. In August alone 3,405 trips were made, and a total of 8,489 km was travelled. The average distance travelled was 2.49km.
The ebikes are maintained by BOLT. All bikes are inspected every 72 hours for maintenance and battery levels. When a bike reached 20% battery, it is taken off line and flagged for a batter swap.
