Right to Read Programme

Public libraries run a programme of themed seasonal events and activities as part of the National Right to Read Programme to promote literacy and reading development for people of all ages.

What is the programme?

Right to Read is a national programme to promote literacy and reading development for people of all ages and backgrounds. Each year, Laois Libraries facilitate programmes designed to support adults, families and children in reading and learning.

What programmes are available?

Spring Into Storytime

Spring Into Storytime is held during the month of April. Libraries host story times for pre-school and primary school aged children throughout the month.

Summer Stars

Summer Stars is a summer reading challenge held from 1st Jun – 31st Aug each year, aimed towards children aged up to 12 years old. Children are encouraged to participate by setting reading goals, recording their reading progress and participating in free activities such as workshops, story times and book clubs.

Children’s Book Festival

Children’s Book Festival occurs during October and consists of a full programme of visits from authors and illustrators to libraries during school hours. Schools are invited to participate by bringing classes to the library to attend workshops and talks.

Family Time at Your Library

Family Time at Your Library is held in December and consists of a series of free workshops and story time events at family friendly times such as evenings and weekends.

My Little Library

My Little Library is a book gifting scheme where ‘Little Library Book Bags’ are made available to children who are due to start school in September. The bags can be collected for free by parents and carers from their nearest library. Each bag contains a book for children who are starting school, to help them prepare for this big step. Each child will also get their first library card when they collect the bag.
