Autism Friendly Initiatives

Public libraries provide autism specific events such as sensory story times, social stories, literacy, art appreciation and film screenings. They may also provide quiet, clutter free areas to make libraries welcoming to people with autism and their carers.

What autism-friendly services and resources are available in our branches?

Laois Libraries have a range of autism-friendly services and resources available in branches including: 

  • Sensory Rooms in Portlaoise and Mountmellick Libraries 
  • Sensory Tables in Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick and Abbeyleix Libraries 
  • Toy and Sensory Resource Lending Collections in Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountmellick and Rathdowney Libraries
  • Sensory baskets containing small calming toys and ear defenders to use during your visit available in all libraries
  • Reader Pens
