Public WiFi

Local authorities provide free public WiFi in designated areas to increase public access to online services, promote economic growth, develop digital infrastructure and improve quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors.

Laois County Council have partnered with the EU and DRCD in providing and rolling out the WIFI4EU programme.

What is the WiFi4EU initiative

The WiFi4EU initiative promotes free access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces including parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centres and museums in municipalities throughout Europe.

Rollout of WiFi4EU

The rollout of the WIFI4EU project will be carried out in the following locations – 

  • Portlaoise Town Centre
  • Portarlington Town Centre
  • Abbeyleix Main Street
  • Mountmellick Main Street 
  • Clonaslee Main Street

Access WIFI4EU

Accessing WIFI4EU is a straightforward process that does not require the user to input any personal information or passwords. Users connect wirelessly to the WIFI4EU network and agree to the Terms and Conditions. As part of the implementation, all safeguards in relation to web content filtering will be put in place. This will ensure that only content deemed to be safe can be viewed on the internet by users.

Locations

Portarlington

Free Public WIFI is available in the following locations:

  • Peoples Park 
  • Link Road between the Fire Station and the Swimming Pool
  • Main Street, Portarlington
  • The Library.  There is also free internal access in the Library

Portlaoise

Free Public WIFI is available in the following locations:

  • The Plaza at County Hall
  • Hynds Square
  • Market Square
  • Fitzmaurice Place amongst others in the town centre

Stradbally

Free Public WIFI is available in the following locations:

  • Market Square
  • The Art House both externally and internally
