Rent Assessment

Laois County Council set rent based on a tenant's income, and it might change during the tenancy. In Laois County Council, rent for all properties follows the Differential Rent Scheme.

Your rent will be calculated based on your total income minus the excluded items.  

How the Differential Rent Scheme works

What income is considered for rent calculation?

  • Net weekly income 
  • Self-employment income 
  • Social welfare payments 
  • Back to work allowance 
  • Maintenance payments 
  • Payments from other Government Departments/Agencies 
  • Rental income from property or land 
  • Pension income 
  • Income from savings, deposits, and investments 
  • Any other income not listed above 

What income is excluded?

  • Child benefit 
  • Carer's allowance 
  • Blind person's allowance 
  • Domiciliary allowance 
  • Foster Care/Guardian Allowance 
  • Fuel allowance 
  • Living alone allowance 
  • Over 80’s allowance 
  • Training allowance from Government-supported back-to-work schemes 
  • Scholarships/Internships 
  • Higher education grants 
  • Lump sums 
  • Shift allowance/overtime
