Here is how it works:
- The Laois County Council tenant tells people about the room they have for rent. (The website www.gov.ie/roomforastudent has information for both tenants and students about renting a room).
- If the tenant and student agree, they ask Laois County Council for permission to rent the room for the academic year.
- Laois County Council might do a Garda (police) check on the student.
- Laois County Council can say yes or no to the application. Reasons for saying no might include:
- The tenant owes rent with no plan to pay it back.
- The house is too crowded.
- Bad behaviour or other good reasons.
- The house is not suitable (too small, in bad condition, etc.).
What happens if I am approved?
If the application is approved, the tenant can rent out the room for the school year.
- The tenant can charge rent, which will be part of their income under Laois County Council’s rent rules and may affect the amount the tenant pays to Laois County Council.
- The tenant and student must handle things like utility bills, deposits, and any problems that come up. Laois County Council will not get involved in these matters.
- The tenant must report any extra income for tax relief, medical card, or social protection benefits.
- Laois County Council can ask the tenant to stop renting the room if there are problems like bad behaviour or overcrowding.
- The tenant is responsible for following the rules, and if they break any, Laois County Council can issue a warning.
At the end of the school year, the student must leave the property. If they want to rent the room again next year, they need to ask Laois County Council for permission again.
