Improvement Works in Lieu of Local Authority Housing Scheme

Laois County Council can provide support to carry out improvement works to a privately owned property.

Improvement works in lieu

Instead of providing social housing, Laois County Council can help improve privately owned homes so people can stay in their own homes with necessary upgrades.

This scheme, called IWILs, allows local authorities to make improvements or extensions to private homes if the owner qualifies for social housing.

Do I qualify?

You may qualify for the scheme if:

  • Your social housing application is approved.
  • You are a local authority tenant who wants to move to a private home and give your current home back to the local authority.
  • You are a tenant of an approved housing body (AHB) who wants to buy a private home and return your current home to the AHB.
  • You own a home that is too crowded or in poor condition and you can’t afford to fix it.

How much does it cost?

Laois County Council will arrange and pay for the improvements. You will pay a fee based on what you can afford for up to 15 years. If you sell your home during this period, you must repay the cost of the improvements.
