Nutrient Management Plan Assessment

Laois County Council may assess nutrient management plans to ensure the spreading of organic sludge and fertilizers does not cause environmental damage.

Sustainable agriculture requires that soil and water quality be maintained. Excessive use of fertiliser or organic manure can create a surplus of nutrients in the soil that will be available for transport to water. Organic nutrients can be transported through surface and ground waters quickly and will eventually be converted to inorganic forms causing pollution of aquatic environments.

Nutrient management planning is a best practice approach which aims to optimise crop yield and quality while minimising fertilizer input. This ensures minimal impact to protect our soil and water resources.
