Joint Policing Committee Support

Laois County Council, together with An Garda Síochána elected representatives and community and voluntary groups, set up and support committees to discuss local policing issues. These issues include crime, public disorder and antisocial behaviour and recommend ways to help reduce crime and improve public safety.

Purpose

As set out in Section 36 of An Garda Síochána Act 2025 (Revised Joint Policing Guidelines August 2014), the purpose of a Joint Policing Committee is to provide a forum where local authority and senior Garda officers responsible for the policing of the area with the participation of Oireachtas Members and Community Interests, can consult, discuss and make recommendations on matters affecting the policing of the area. 

Membership

Laois County Joint Policing Committee (JPC) comprises a membership of 25:  This includes:

  • Local Elected Representations (13) 
  • Oireachtas members (3) 
  • Local Authority Chief Executive (1) 
  • Senior Garda Officers (2) 
  • Community Representatives (6)
