The moving, removal or exhumation of a person’s remains (including cremated remains) from one burial place to another requires prior written consent from the Council in the form of an Exhumation Licence.
Exhumations are only considered in exceptional circumstances. Due regard for respect to the deceased person, other interred remains in the burial ground and privacy of the family and friends of the deceased person must be protected at all times.
How do I apply for an Exhumation Licence?
- Complete the exhumation application form
- Enclose the deceased’s death certificate
- Enclose €200 fee
- Send to the Community Department, Laois County Council, Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
