Minister Frank Feighan, Minister of State for Public Health, Well Being and National Drugs Strategy visited a number of Healthy Ireland funded initiatives in Laois on  Tuesday, 3rd  May, to view at first-hand various health partnership programmes and health and wellbeing initiatives being undertaken by Healthy Ireland Laois in the county.

During his tour, the Minister visited Heritage House in Abbeyleix, where he officially launched the 1st Clean Air Around us wellbeing campaign for Playgrounds in Laois. Ann Marie Maher, Sports & Leisure Officer introduced the Minister to the Animation students of Abbeyleix Further Education and Training Centre that produced the first of a series of new signage, to encourage parents and guardians to refrain from smoking and vaping in Laois playgrounds. These students were vital, she said, in clarifying core themes and clearly displayed their talents and skills, under the supervision of Ms Jackie Carter and Mr Gareth Jenkins.

Minister Frank Feighan said “I am so impressed with the breadth of work, that is being undertaken in Laois for the Health and Wellbeing of the various communities.  Over the last number of years, Healthy Ireland has invested in several initiatives,  in partnership with the Local Community Development Committee and the Children and Young Persons Services Committee.  I can see today the benefit of ensuring that these structures are empowered to design and deliver actions locally, that support people in Laois to live healthy lives.”
